“People with a history of depression have a 3 to 7 times higher risk of developing epilepsy…”
Her first job as a copywriter was writing informational materials for a children’s hospital. Including a brochure about seizures.
But nothing would prepare her for this…
Every life has a story. Whether it be sad, bad, triumphant or fulfilling.
What better way to educate and empower those with epilepsy than by telling OUR own stories? (I’m sure they’re as different as we are!)
They say: “You are what you eat.” Not necessarily.
Here are some suggestions for sensible eating and supplementing your diet.
Of course everyone is different — with different needs — and on different meds.
But there are some rules that hold true…
I was born a writer. Just like I was born with brown eyes.
In 5th grade when we were assigned to write a poem with an illustration, everyone wrote about the spring, flowers, stars, the city, the country.
I wrote about racism. My illustration was a black silhouette pasted against white paper.
My teacher promptly sent me home with a note for my parents, accusing me of plagiarism.
I never met anyone with epilepsy until I was 29.
And that was a best friend of my husband’s. (Which may explain why Arthur didn’t freak out when I had a seizure on our first date!)
That was it. Beginning and end.
Almost everybody has a wish for their birthday.
This month I turn 71. And a contribution to the Epilepsy Foundation Eastern PA is my birthday gift wish.
For me, it was three different stages, ages and issues…
1. Growing into my own skin…
Being a pre-teen or a teenager is, to say the least, no picnic. Add the layer of epilepsy on top of it and you’ve got a disaster waiting to happen.
At least one third of people with epilepsy also have depression.
Epilepsy can have different effects on memory functions and depression for various reasons.
Because the portion of the brain where memory and emotions are stored — the limbic system — can be disturbed by epileptic seizures.
In fact, memory problems are one of the most reported problems that coincide with epilepsy.
Friendship…trust…caring…sharing…romance.
The question is; how do you get there?
Especially when you have epilepsy?
Well for me, it was a very rocky road.
