So you have epilepsy. And you’re left-handed.
Is it a curse…a blessing…or a challenge?
Well, you’re not exactly alone.
According to an article in Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery & Psychiatry, if more than 90 percent of your seizures occur while sleeping, you are said to have sleep seizures.
The article also notes that an estimated 7.5 percent to 45 percent of people who have epilepsy have some form of nocturnal seizures.
I never had a clue what neuropsychology was all about. Although it sounded like a good idea.
Then a while ago, I had an assessment. (Mercifully, it was the two-hour test and not the 8-hour version.)
The neuropsychologist I went to had all the records from my last 12 years with my neurologist and it was clear he had done his homework.
The question was, did my deficit in memory come from my history of seizures, my previous concussions (one of which had been only a month ago) or even age itself? (I thought to myself, geeze, I’m only 70!)
Here’s basically what happened…
Who have you chosen for your seizure care?
Your primary doctor?
A neurologist?
Or an epileptologist?
Your choice could make all the difference.
Like lions, they smell the difference…
Like hawks, they sweep down on you…
And like hyenas, they laugh and eat your heart out.
Whether it’s for medical or recreational purposes, some states allow both.
However, the federal government still considers most types of cannabis to be illegal.
A new report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, has found that a disconnect between states and the federal government is leading to fragmented politics and risks to the public.
Long before Dilantin and Phenobarbital, there was epilepsy. And herbal remedies.
Of course, these herbal epilepsy remedies are NOT substitutes to anti-seizure medications, but are more like a supplementary support.
Most of them work by preventing a seizure and other symptoms of epilepsy.
(NYU Langone Medical Center estimates that 20 percent of people taking prescription drugs also use herbs.)
Some may sound weird and others familiar. But hey, how can you argue with success?
Many of us were diagnosed with epilepsy at a wee age…
Others were completely taken by surprise in their teens or later years.
Whatever age you were when you were first diagnosed with epilepsy, I’m sure you have advice and insights to share from your own experiences…
The relationship between celiac disease and epilepsy has been documented in medical journals for decades. Yet neurologists rarely consider it as an underlying possibility in cases of idiopathic epilepsy.
It never ceases to amaze me what an impact celiac disease can have on one’s life and quality of life, but there is no routine testing for it. Yet, I‘ve been told (and have read) that very few people with epilepsy are told of the possibility of celiac disease!
