Food or medications — which would you choose? | March 30, 2026

It’s heartbreaking, but all too common…

A patient calls their doctor after repeated seizures.

He had missed his medication for about a week. He had recently been laid off and lost insurance coverage.

He couldn’t afford to refill his eslicarbazepine acetate (Aptiom) prescription.

How does this happen? Why?

Yes, I did fall for it.

Because I know people who have gone through the morass of Medicaid. People who have had to choose between meds and food.

They are not looking for freebies. They are just trying to survive.

The U.S. is ranked #1 in drug price expenditure per person, at a whopping $1,300 a year.

And with the new medical insurance changes, many who formerly had insurance coverage are stuck.

How much a month do you pay for medical insurance? (I’m on Medicare, so I am one of the lucky ones.)
