Gretchen’s horror! | December 9, 2025

“Out of curiosity, I checked out a new library book entitled ‘Why I Love Horror’.

It’s a number of essays by writers of that genre, and I expected it to be, well, shallow but humorous.

What an eye-opener!  (Though there are humorous parts and less deep parts.)

One of the writers is disabled, and I thought, Yes!

Who knows more about horror than us?

So – curiosity continuing – I was wondering if you ever ran across fiction, particularly horror fiction, in your reading?

One of the most frequent reasons the writers gave for their love of the genre was that in writing, they felt less alone – also in reading.

That was certainly my experience.

High on the list of things to be thankful for is the existence of libraries and of course of books.”

Letter from Gretchen to PFJ
