If You Didn’t Have Epilepsy, How Would You Change Your Life?  | April 30, 2024

I have to admit, I’d still be a writer. Writing is my passion, it’s what gets me up in the morning and I couldn’t imagine living without it.

Yes, sometimes I can’t find the keyboard, sometimes I can’t think straight and sometimes, I can’t concentrate.

But since I’m a freelancer, it will always be there, waiting for me.

Others aren’t as fortunate, I know. They want to be in the military, the medical field, teach, go to college or graduate school, be an engineer, work in retail, DRIVE…the list is endless.

But if you did have the options — without epilepsy haunting you — what would you choose to do?

  1. My aspiration to pilot jets for the U.S. Navy was hindered by epilepsy. After exploring other roles in government without success, I chose to pursue a Ph.D. in history, which I completed in 2005. However, there are days when concentration and clear thinking elude me, complicating my writing endeavors. Interestingly, this foggy state affects my teaching to a lesser degree, yet it has significantly obstructed my pursuit of a permanent teaching role. Consequently, I’ve relied on temporary adjunct positions. The medications I take have not fully managed my seizures and come with various side effects.

  2. I also have periods of writing when the words/concepts/thoughts elude me and it’s very frustrating, I know.

But I haven’t had to suffer in the public sector.

And although you’ve done the best to accommodate your epilepsy, the compromise must be maddening, to say the least.
