Stop the FDA from regulating supplements and nutrients | December 3, 2021

The Dietary Supplement Labeling Act pretends to be consumer-oriented, but instead will give the FDA redundant power that it could easily misuse, restricting your access to nutritional supplements and raising the cost of buying them.

In short, nutritional supplements will be regulated like prescription drugs…

Supplements such as probiotics, fish oil, krill oil, vitamins, sulfur and other natural, commonly consumed supplements that people know cure or strongly support cures from everything from high blood pressure to cancer, will now have to pass extensive clinical trials to be sold in the US.

Under this bill, the FDA and the Institute of Medicine must compile a list of dietary ingredients that could lead to adverse events or are otherwise deemed risky in some way. Creating a list of “bad” ingredients or “bad” doses completely based on arbitrary or non-existent standards is a slippery slope; for example, in Europe, the maximum dosage of vitamins was restricted to less than what is found in fruits and vegetables.

Moreover, almost all of this act’s provisions are already covered by existing laws, so there’s no need for any new legislation.

Tell your representatives you want your local health food store and natural drug store to disseminate information on clinical studies involving improvements and cures when using certain supplements and nutritional (food) based treatments.

Big Pharma is not always right and their harsh chemicals often cause more harm than good in many, many people.

Stop the FDA from regulating supplements and nutrients.

  4. They did this with the NAC supplement recently. Safe and effective for decades, now all of a sudden it must be regulated like a drug…..

  5. The Dietary Supplement Labeling Act, S.1310, was introduced in 2011. Several lobbying groups including The Alliance for Natural Health lobbied against it because it would affect the profits of the companies that pay them to lobby congress. The Pharmaceutical industry are not exactly angels but at least you know what is in their products, the indications for which they are intended and the recommended dosage based on peer reviewed double blind clinical trials. When it comes to so-called nutritional substances you are often relying on the quality control of unregulated factories in China, India, and Eastern Europe. You are also relying on word of mouth recommendations rather than scientifically designed trials. Furthermore, the impurities in nutritional supplements can interfere with the action of certain medications you are taking. (Is it worth the risk?)

If you want (need?) vitamins and minerals why not eat American grown fruits and vegetables? If you want (need?) probiotics why not make your own Kefir from American SCOBY and American Milk. (I make my own so it must be easy!)

And the statement”…that people know cure or strongly support cures from everything from high blood pressure to cancer, will now have to pass extensive clinical trials to be sold in the US ” is, at best, misleading. They don’t have to be subject to trials in the way pharmaceuticals do and that is one reason why “people” don’t actually know if they “…cure or strongly support cures…”
