Feds Fine Abbott Over Marketing Of Depakote | October 22, 2011

As it prepares to split into two sectors, Abbott is setting aside “$1.5 billion of litigation reserves” related to ongoing settlement discussions related to Depakote.

Abbott is accused by former employees, and now the feds, alleging the company promoted Depakote for unapproved uses, such as treatment of Alzheimer’s, dementia, and that it paid kickbacks to doctors to boost sales.

Apparently, Big Pharma is down on the investor’s hot list, so separating the businesses between pharmaceuticals and medical devices, diagnostic tests and baby formula could help the financial outlook for Abbott.

Which is good, when you have a $1.5 billion monkey on your back!

  1. I have no doubt that Dr’s are getting kick backs from most all the medications they prescribe.
Look at the prescibed drugs being promoted on TV..
I guess the Dr’s can’t prescribe them fast enough to suit the Pharmacutical Co’s.

My Dr calling me out of the blue trying to up my dose,
tells me that she’s either trying to fill her quota for higher kick back or the pharmaceutical co’s pushing for higher sales.

  2. They say “influencing” docs is against the law now. So instead of pens, they give them exotic locations for lecture series!
