Below is a compilation by website forum members who have had positive personal experiences with docs over the years.

This list is based on personal recommendations and, of course, is purely subjective.

But I thought it might be helpful for anyone looking for a good Neurologist…Epileptologist…Neurosurgeon…or Pediatric Doctor.

NOTE: The National Association of Epilepsy Centers (NAEC) provides a directory of specialized epilepsy centers in the U.S. along with other useful information about epilepsy. http://www.naeclocator.org/find.htm

  2. you needpicture list for connecticut Dr Susan Spencer had passed away and I believe its been over 6 years.the reason why I know this is cuz she was my doctor for over 25 years. Thanks

  3. One the Oregon neurologists on the list, Dr. Paula Gerber (now Dr. Gerber-Gore) is excellent. As my doctor she took steps to diagnose my osteoporosis after being on dilantin for 35 years. She also understood some of the professional challenges people with epilepsy experience in the work place. Other docs never gave these things a thought. Unfortunately, Dr. Gerber-Gore has taken a leave of absence to raise her family. She is missed, but she’ll be back.

    Comment by Tom Waltz — January 5, 2014 @ 10:30 PM

  4. Arizona’s Dr. Kris Smith at Barrows is also EXCELLENT!. I am alive and well because of his steady hand and intense knowledge of the brain. He will operate when others won’t and has extended the lives of many who were told they didn’t have a chance. There is a very nice Hampton Inn next door. Barrows is worth a second opinion if your situation is dire. Functional MRI and internal EEG with a week in their epilepsy unit helped locate my seizure focus area. Barrows in Phoenix is great!!!

    Comment by Alan — January 6, 2014 @ 1:17 AM

    • Dr Smith is an idiot! He wanted to treat my shunt failure with caffeine, because he couldn’t figure out that I was in shunt failure!

      Comment by Lynda Myers — February 2, 2014 @ 5:02 PM

      • I’m not so sure we are talking about the same Smith. He told me to avoid caffine at all costs. I can only speak to my experiences with brain surgury, He Is awesome! Idiot? c’mon, Really?

        Comment by Alan — February 2, 2014 @ 10:35 PM

  5. Humble thanks to all of you for correcting my mistakes and updating me to make this a better and more comprehensive list.

  8. I can add Dr. Chen and his team at the VA Hospital in Houston, Texas. Also Dr. Benut, Epileptologist, Central Arkansas VA. Unfortunately he went to CA.

    Comment by Tina Bruce — January 7, 2014 @ 7:36 PM

  9. Thanks lots for the info on Dr Chen. Do you know were in CA Dr. Benut went?

    Comment by Phylis Feiner Johnson — January 8, 2014 @ 9:11 AM

  10. Please add Dr Steven Pacia, who works out of NYU and Lennox Hill hospitals in New York City. He is the most fantastic neurologist I have ever met! Im speaking ftom 50 years of experience and dozens and dozens of doctors. Because of him I’m 4 plus years seizure free!

    Comment by charlie — January 9, 2014 @ 4:46 PM

  11. Is Dr. Pacia (whom I know literally, saved your life) a neurologist or a neurosurgeon?

    I put him under neurosurgeons…

    Comment by Phylis Feiner Johnson — January 9, 2014 @ 7:59 PM

    • He’s a Neurologist

      Comment by charlie — January 10, 2014 @ 2:09 PM

  12. I need to get a new neurologist, in northern california, but very few of them take medi-cal now.

    Comment by Crystal Cahill — January 15, 2014 @ 12:19 AM

  13. Why don’t you try asking your local EFA for a recommendation?

I’m sure they come across this all the time.

    Comment by Phylis Feiner Johnson — January 15, 2014 @ 8:39 AM

    • i called my insurance company there is one but he is booked up for months and plus i think i need to get another referral from my primary care doctor.

      Comment by Crystal Cahill — January 15, 2014 @ 7:18 PM

      • Well, it wouldn’t hurt to get recommendations from both! The EFA and your primary care doctor.

        Comment by Phylis Feiner Johnson — January 16, 2014 @ 12:32 PM

  14. okay. called the office of the neurologist who accepts medi-cal and i need to get an referral from my primary care doctor and she does not work there anymore so for the third time i switched my primary care doctor. hopefully i can be seen before i run out of refills.

    Comment by Crystal Cahill — January 27, 2014 @ 7:51 PM

    • Find out who took her place and explain the urgency of your situation.

      Comment by Phylis Feiner Johnson — January 28, 2014 @ 8:01 AM

      • the clinic understands the urgency about it, i already gave them the heads up i have an appointment next week to get the referral going, and also to follow up with the other medical issue that is going on. hopefully i’ll get in soon to be seen by the neurologist and yes i will have him call my ob gyn.

        Comment by Crystal Cahill — January 29, 2014 @ 11:32 PM

  15. Well done!

    Comment by Phylis Feiner Johnson — January 30, 2014 @ 9:02 AM

    • i went to my primary care doctor today, if i don’t hear anything in two weeks i will give them a call and also they started using a new system, she also wanted asked to sign a release of my records from the ob gyn so that she is on the same page.

      Comment by Crystal Cahill — February 5, 2014 @ 8:51 PM

  16. Crystal, my guess it that they’re changing over to a new computer system (which every doc is doing) and that’s part of the hold up.

    Comment by Phylis Feiner Johnson — February 6, 2014 @ 10:35 AM

    • all i can do is just wait like everyone else. if i do run out of refills i’ll just call my primary care doctor and she can just give me refills until i can be seen by a neuro. fingers crossed.

      Comment by Crystal Cahill — February 6, 2014 @ 8:31 PM

      • they are still getting used to the new system. hopefully things will get sorted out soon.

        Comment by Crystal Cahill — February 7, 2014 @ 12:47 AM

      • I think you’ve got this well thought out. Fingers crossed.

        Comment by Phylis Feiner Johnson — February 7, 2014 @ 12:30 PM

  17. Need to amend the doc who did the awesome surgery on my noodle when she was still in Minnesota. Aviva Abosch is now out at University of Colorado Denver.

    Comment by Travis — February 17, 2014 @ 12:51 AM

  18. Travis, thanks so much for the correction and update. You’ve helped us all!

    Comment by Phylis Feiner Johnson — February 17, 2014 @ 11:10 AM

  19. I take auras too, the neuro I have is so busy with other patients that he can’t find the time to see me. He is also the Top surgeon In N.S. He told me the last time he saw me that he didn’t need to see me anymore. Although I still have issues that I would like taken care of, I feel he has me on to much meds. although I hate meds after going 5 years seizure free after surgery. But, they keep increasing my meds.
My epilepogist that he signed me over to me has left to go to montreal to study epilepsy further. He never assigned me to another one, but I would pefer a female because I was brought up on female doctors. Also I am going threw changes now as well. And they tell me I don’t need a pycristest, so I don’t know what to do. Get my family dr. to try and find me one or what? I thought you could help me were I have developed trust in you.

  20. Hi Shawna, sorry you’re been through such an ordeal. But the only other thing I can offer is the U.S. News & World Report’s list of top ranking hospitals.

Attached are links to their most current lists for Adult and Pediatric Neurology & Neurosurgery.

This year, more 1,300 hospitals are included. The top 50 for adults are ranked and the rest are listed alphabetically.

Criteria for the survey was: hospital reputation and satisfaction…rankings by patients’ …details of the services provided…plus patients’ feedback about their experiences.

To locate the top 50 hospitals for adults, click on: http://health.usnews.com/best-hospitals/search?hospital_name=Hospital+name&specialty_id=IHQNEUR&city=City%2

And yes, your alternative solution is a good idea. Ask anyone you trust: Family practitioner…GYN…another doctor you know, or even friends for recommendations of good and trusted neuros.

I found my neuro by chance, in a local hospital, because I had to have a spinal and he was the one on call!
