Epilepsy Talk

Gratitude is the Attitude! | July 29, 2010

Sometimes, I get into a funk so bad that it’s like a black hole.  Until I remember the safety ladder that I always carry in my pocket.

I think of at least five things I’m grateful for.  Or if I’m down there awhile, I stretch it to ten.

Here are the top five on my gratitude list:

1. My life.  After going to 12 schools in 12 years and a war zone home, I have a home of my own where I’ve lived for more than 20 years, peacefully and secure.

2. My husband.  He’s the one who makes me feel secured, loved, important.  He respects me and to him, I am valuable.

3. My cat. I never knew I’d end up having to save her life but the rewards have been immense.  Lots of laughs, comfort and cuddles.

4. My friends.  They are my sanity check whom I can run to with my troubles and triumphs.  They applaud me some times and at other, tell me I’m out of my mind.

5. My job.  I live to write.  Always have.  It’s my reason for getting up in the morning.  And what could be better than writing to help people with epilepsy.  It’s a win-win!

I only hope others are as fortunate as me…

  1. Thank you Phylis, we need to be thankful for what is positive in our lives. That is a good idea to write down some things that each one of us has to be grateful for. I will think of some and then put them in here.

  2. I am thankful for

    1. My reason for living. I have raised 4 children and I have 3 grandchildren. I taught my children to read after they came home to school. The schools in California were not required to teach reading. I was a teacher and a housewife at home.

    2. My husband and 1 of my sons live with me and give me the support that I need. They support me when I am down.

    3. The Bible builds me up. It helps me to have a life that keeps me sane and learn from the people in the past. It teaches me what is right and wrong.

    4. Your website helps me with topics that I can learn from and put into practice with my seizures.

    5. I appreciate your research that you do for all of us. Your friendship and kindness are very important to me.

    Comment by Ruth Brown — August 22, 2010 @ 9:15 AMAug -04:00Aug

    • So far, the only one I gave poison ivy to was Arthur. And he looks worse than me.

My car is due at the body shop Monday, so this will just be one more thing to add to the list…

And I’ve stopped crying, because the tears really make my poison ivy burn!

Thanks for the hugs, but don’t get too close. Last night we were blowing kisses to our friends! (Hugging can be hazardous to your health?) xoxoxoxoxo

      Comment by Phylis Feiner Johnson — August 22, 2010 @ 9:15 AMAug -04:00Aug

  22. Tell Arthur I hope he gets well soon. What are you treating the poison ivy with?

I am glad that your car will be back Monday, but what about the garage door.

I am thankful that no one can get poison ivy through the internet. So, I can still give you hugs. With all that is going on, I am surprised that you are still on the internet.

Just to make sure, I will hug you from afar.

    Comment by Phylis Feiner Johnson — August 23, 2010 @ 9:15 PMAug -04:00Aug

  28. I felt good all night and not yucky like I usually do. I was and am able to do housework. When I feel yucky, I cannot do housework.

It is not my family. It is the fact that I can rest. It is quiet. Great for seizures!! No triggers.

When everyone is awake and I try to do housework, they get in my way. This way, no one is in my way.

I am cleaning out the refrig. Usually, everyone is always in the refrig getting something. Plus my son tells me that I am keeping the refrig open too long.

They are greatful when I do it at night.

    • Hi y’all,
It is so great to see a place where positive people talk about the good things they see in tough times. I’m a fan of Rick Warren’s “Purpose Driven Life”. the one thing that sticks with me is when he say’s [Life is not always ups and downs, but more like a Railroad track. On one rail we have Good positive things happening, and on the other rail we have not so positive/ negative things happening] I like to keep on the positive track as much as I can. On my list of the many positive things going on, one of them is that I might be able to drive in October after 9 years off the Road. PTL. It sounds like you all are trying to be on that rail too.keep it up!

      Comment by Charlie — September 7, 2010 @ 9:15 AMSep -04:00Sep

      • Welcome Charlie!

What happens if you take the middle rail? ;-)

Thanks so much for the great insight and quote. I’m going to look up Rick Warren on Amazon.

And congratulations on driving. That must be like getting a new lease on life! Be careful…and tell us how you do!

    • Well, At the bookstore, when I was waiting for my father or mother to pick me up. It was my father. He told me he tapped on the bookstore window to let me know he was there. When I didnt hear or respond to him, he came in to let me know. It startled me. Dont know if I went out right away. I just remembered being in the car and my father saying to me, why did you not come. I dont really know, maybe I had a seiz. He had asked me do you know where you are? It made me more upset. I was already upset I had a seiz. It was all a blur what really happened. He had said I never had a seiz where I didnt respond. I told him Its nothing new. I have them too. I dont like it when people say that. Its best when they dont make a big deal about it. To act like nothing happened.

  61. Hi Charlie, glad to have you with us. I know what you meant by the third rail. In CA, we have BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit.) When they first started making it, they made it clear that a person would get an electric shock and possibly die from stepping or falling on the middle rail.

It is the same with Amtrak, I think. Charlie which one are you talking about? I hope you get your driver’s license back.

  64. Jennifer, have you tried keeping a daily seizure diary noting your sleep patterns, what you eat, your activities, emotional events…how you feel before a seizure (auras?), during a seizure and afterwards…plus the duration of the seizure.

That might help you identify your triggers in a positive way and help you gain more control.

Also, see “How to Stop a Seizure” http://epilepsytalk.com/2010/04/23/seizure-interruptions/

  69. I hope you don’t mind a little poem I wrote a couple months ago. It’s titled “40″ because that’s how many years I’ve lived with Epilepsy. My Sister said it should really be “50″ cause I really didn’t count the years they were trying to figure out what was ‘wrong’ with me.
    40
    by Charlie

40 days doesn’t seem that long,
    40 years, really does
When your life is a struggle,
    One day, is enough.

    40 years Moses wandered,
    The hot desert sand,
    Hoping to find,
    The Lords ‘Promised Land’

    40 days seems quite different,
    Or so it would seem.
    Unless you were Noah,
    who wandered the Sea’s.

    Such is the way,
    We travel through life.
    One day at a time,
filled with ease, or with strife.

    We welcome the good days,
    That we’re happy to see.
We claw through the bad ones,
    Much worse, they could be.

    40 days, or 40 years,
    All start with an hour.
    Apart, we might seem weak,
    But with God,we have power.

    So when we’re feeling alone,
And it’s so hard to see,
    There are plenty of others,
    Just like You,and like Me.

  74. LONELINESS

    Lonelienss is different than depression
    It is caused by iisolation
    How do you isolate yourself?
One way is by staying away from people
Computers, TV, cell phones and text messaging
These technologies keep us from talking to people

We need eye to eye contact with other people
Actually talking to our neighbors, families and friends
Instead of doing this by e-mail, actually visiting friends

If we do not, we can have depression and loneliness
Is actually loneliness caused by isolation away from other people?

Do not allow this to happen to you!!
Talk to family at dinner, instead of watching TV
Smile and laugh with your family and friends

Thanks for the nice comments on my little poem, the other day. Until I feel creative again, why don’t one of you throw something out there?
BTW That was an Excellent piece on loneliness, Ruth.
One of the many things I’m thankful for is my faith. Believing in God helps pull me out of those lonely times and lets me know I’m never truly alone. Today was a good day and I’m expecting tommorrow to be also.

      • Epilepsy was my dirty secret,
Carefully hidden in my back pocket…
Until I realized I was mistaken.

It is what I have, but it’s not who I am,
And so I proclaim to the world,
“bring it on” if you want to…
        I’m no stranger to pain.

    • Jennifer, Migraines and seizures are not mutually exclusive:

People with epilepsy are more than twice as likely to develop migraine headaches as those without the disorder. Research showed that more than 20 percent of people with epilepsy have migraines, compared to 11 percent of the general population.

Evidence supports the coexistence of migraines with the following conditions:

      * In migraine sufferers, 6% are epileptic, more than ten times than the general population.

      * In one study, people and their relatives who are diagnosed with epilepsy were found to be approximately 2.4 times more likely to have migraines than the control group.

      * In another epilepsy study, about 16% of those people who had migraines also experienced epileptic seizures before, during or after a migraine.

      * While most migraine sufferers do not have epilepsy and most epileptics do not suffer from migraines, these findings still indicate a significant “overlap” of both of these conditions.

Epilepsy and migraines share common features, including the fact that both are episodic. Also, they share many common triggers and symptoms. A person may have a seizure on one occasion and a classic attack of migraine on another.

Both share common treatment options as well. The goal is to eliminate the events and prevent side effects, too. So, when a person has both epilepsy and migraines, it is logical to try to “consolidate” treatments and use one medication for both conditions.

Research shows that Depacon (Valproate) and Topamax (Topiramate) are effective in treating migraines and epilepsy. And each has FDA approval for treating them together. Depakote (Divalproex Sodium) also works for both, creating a therapeutic “two-fer.”

There are also several other antiepileptic drugs that have also been shown to lessen migraine headaches – such as Neurontin (Gabapentin), Keppra ( Levetiracetam) and Zonegran (Zonisamide). However, the dose of AEDs in the treatment of migraines is usually lower than that used for epilepsy.

Hope you don’t have another migraine any time soon…

  81. Jennifer, you are loved, epilepsy or not. Some days are totally lousy and some are better.

Yesterday, I erased a complete document and had to spend the rest of the day recreating it and putting it together. I was NOT a happy camper.

    But I was happy that:

    1. I had a great dinner with the Executive Director of our local Epilepsy Foundation

    2. We brainstormed and had some terric ideas

    3. Arthur was able to give her some wonderful wines for the golf outing silent auction

    4. I was able to give her her first “grown up” briefcase (she’s only 28, but full of fire) which she loved

    5. We’re developing a good relationship which I hope will lead to more events, more participation, better education, awareness and fund-raising for research.

Most people that are looking to go to it are 1/2 hr away and dont want to make the trip. We have about 12 people. I think the epilepsy foundation here told us about it. I guess you could advertise about having a group, when you provide information about epilepsy. Maybe you might even start a group. Best of luck.

    2. I cooked a good meal, the GARD diet way

    3. I cleaned a bit

    4. pulled some weeds

    5. The GARD diet isnt so hard after all, Just got to start with fresh food instead of packaged, and as far as seasoning food, salt, pepper, and herbs does the trick

And as dessert, just have to do research, and youl find something new to try that is allowed in the diet

I have already found some interesting foods to try

I am the LORD your God. I am holding your hand, so don’t be afraid.

  88. Charlie, that is a beautiful verse from the Bible.

    I am thankful for:
    1. I am through with research for my daughter and grand daughter.
    2. I can think of more positive things.
    3. I slept in and did not have time for coffee.
    4. I am thankful for Gratitude is the Attitude.
    5. I am looking forward to another day.

    Comment by Ruth Brown — September 16, 2010 @ 9:15 AMSep -04:00Sep

  89. Surprisingly, it is Gratitude is the Attitude. I was writing down 7 generations of family for them and then I was going to mail it off. I was almost finished.

Everything I said about my husband’s side of the family will be denied by the rest of the family. She still needs the dates. I told her which family member to call up about the dates. I do not have them either. I could not get them. I could if I did more research. I promised my father-in-law that I would not do the research and I have not. The same with my mother-in-laws family, on my husband’s side.

So, the information that I have is very sketchy. My daughter will find no information on that side of the family, exept the present generation. Since Brown is a common name, she will not find out anything. She will be told that I have the wrong information, which is very possible. I just took them at their word. No dates!!

The rest of my family history, I gave her the links and she can get the dates. I all ready have the dates. She will not get them from me, now.

Less work for me!! She did not like something I said yesterday. It is true. It is surprising what facts you find out that you do not like when doing a family tree. You have to take it with a grain of salt.

I can go on with my life and let her do the work. It is a school project for my grand daughter.

  95. Hi,

im frustrated today because I have places to go and want to be able to go without anyone having to take me.

If I go with my father to aldies food grocery store, I almost always have a seiz. Dont know why. Maybe coz I have had them with 3 friends of mine at separate occasions, I may have this anxiety of” oh my, am I going to have a seiz again?”

I also want to go to Target department store.

I hate it. Its frustrating, the transportation issue.

I also have some foods I want to try. Just anxious about getting it and how much its going to cost, and which to get first. Also I cant get it all at the same time.

I find I have anxieties about alot of things. Like “what if this …. is going to happen, what if I cant handle it” about a lot of situations. What do you do phylis. I read you have anxieties, or panic attacks?

    im greatfull,

    1. I had a great time with my friend yesterday

    2. my seiz this morning was not a complex partial

    3. I accidently ate a forbitten food yesterday

    4. I find, untill I find out exactly what foods dont have the forbitten foods in my list, it will take a process of learning it all

    5. im still fully commited in this

    Comment by Jennifer Schnegg — September 17, 2010 @ 9:15 PMSep -04:00Sep

    • You probably get so anxious about going out with your dad because he’s so impatient and not terribly understanding.

As for anxiety, Lamictal is an anti-anxiety and anti-seizure drug. So is Klonopin. And when I’m really going over the edge, I take 0.56 MG of Xanax.

Plus I walk and walk and walk. And write to try to divert myself.

  102. hi,

im frustrated coz my boyfriend knows im doing this way of eating, and keeps thinking im doing this to loose weight. What frustrated me was today he got a cherry dessert after his lunch today. I of coarse got a salad with roast chicken on it. It really frustrated me. I wanted to get one too. He normally wouldnt do it. I dont think he did it to make me frustrated. I just think he shouldnt have done it. What do you think? Should I have said something?

    Comment by Jennifer Schnegg — September 19, 2010 @ 9:15 PMSep -04:00Sep

  103. Jennifer, I have diabetes and I have to eat a special diet. There are foods that I cannot have, like choclate cake and a lot of other things that I cannot have. He feels that he does not have to be on my diet.

Your husband is not doing it to wreck your diet. Are you on the GARD diet? Whichever diet you are on, maybe he does not want to be on it. Maybe he feels that you can use self-control. I know that a lot of times I give into the temptations.

I recommend that you sit down and talk nicely to him to find out what he is thinking and how he feels about the whole thing.

    Comment by Ruth Brown — September 20, 2010 @ 9:15 AMSep -04:00Sep

    • I talked with him and he told me, if I wanted to eat something sweet then I could have gotten 1 too. He said I chose to eat this way. He chooses not to.

      Comment by Jennifer Schnegg — September 20, 2010 @ 9:15 AMSep -04:00Sep

      • Frankly, I don’t think he gets it. I think you should sit down with him and explain WHAT the GARD diet does, WHY you’re on it and what you HOPE to achieve.

Until he understands the reason and importance of it, he’ll continue to misinterpret your intentensions (and keep on tormenting you with the offer of sweets!)

Of course HE doesn’t have to be on it, but he should respect your dedication and the purpose.

        End of lecture. ;-)

  113. Thankful list for today…
1 I have a friend named Lora in Fl. that is coming to the end of her life and is Graduating to Heaven. I know the frustration of not being “There” and feeling helpless, but I found a really cheap flight, that I’m Thankful for, and If I get there in time, I’ll see her again. I owe her a lot for all the miles she used getting me from Dr to Dr, shopping, Church, you name it.
I’m thankful for her life and I know God has a special place in Heaven for her.
I’m also thankful that I will be able to renew my License while I’m there, in anticipation of my future day behind the wheel.
I’m thankful that I’ll get to see my Brother-in-law who had sucessful cancer Surgery 2 weeks ago.
Just this AM, I was thinking that none of these things could happen.
Sometimes when we think all the doors are shutting in our face, we find a door that was left unlocked for us, so we could do the things we thought ‘impossible’.
    Bless you all!

      Comment by Phylis Feiner Johnson — September 23, 2010 @ 9:15 PMSep -04:00Sep

      • It went ok with reem. I didnt press the issue what she should do, at the present moment.

I and other students at the studio I take lessons from, play 1x mo. at a local coffee shop. Most players are much younger than I. There are some electric guitar players and accoustic guitar players. Im the only one that plays the classical guitar and classical music. it has nylon strings and do finger picking. Thats without playing with a pick and using the fingers instead. The others use a pick. If you know what I mean. If I knew how to post a picture of me holding the guitar, I would.

  115. phylis, is there anything that I can suggest to reem that may be easier to stop this hurting herself. I truely think she wants to stop, but doesnt know what to do. She told me she wants to. Any suggestions will help.

    Comment by Jennifer Schnegg — September 23, 2010 @ 9:15 AMSep -04:00Sep

    • I think you need to get her counseling, whether it’s through the Epilesy Foundation (do the have an Epilepsy Foundation in Egypt?) You’ve got to get her out of that house. And you have to explore her options. Because, frankly, I think she’s too paralized with depression and fear to move on any type of action.

      Comment by Phylis Feiner Johnson — September 23, 2010 @ 9:15 PMSep -04:00Sep

  116. Jennifer, I recommend that you suggest to her that she sees a psychiatrist. That would be a big help to her. In the meantime, she should wear a helmet, so she does not get a concussion or really hurt herself.

Does she have headaches before she bangs her head? Has she talked to her doctor? She has too.

    Comment by Ruth Brown — September 23, 2010 @ 9:15 AMSep -04:00Sep

  117. Phylis,

when I said that she hurts herself, I meant she scratches herself with her hands. Yes she see’s a neurologist. She had a vagus nerve stimulator which had helped but, it made it hard for her to breath, even at a low setting.

She said she doesnt want to see a psyciatrist, her mother even had one come to their house, but she still didnt want to talk.

She has all the the things padded up so she wont hurt herself. She even has a bed with railing so she wont fall out.

Do you have any suggestions how I can convince her to speak with a psyciatrist? I will suggest her this site, and then she has others to talk with too.

I tryed to get through your email direct but it wont let me.

I had a few complex partials 3-4 maybe. Raymond said they are right now around 3:15pm. and usually that many. Short but many, which is usually the case.

I dont know if I should stay off from computer and tv if it would make a difference.

      Comment by Phylis Feiner Johnson — September 25, 2010 @ 9:15 PMSep -04:00Sep

    • well, most grocery stores dont care many foods that dont contain any type of corn product(even corn syrup), wheat, milk, or beans. In other words, most processed foods contain that, and I cant eat it. I can eat all other foods, meaning fresh food you have to cook yourself. Too bad I cant eat my favorite homemade yogurt. Even if it doesnt help reduce seiz, I will be healthier all around. I find it exiting because I get to experiment with woods i’ve never eaten before.

      Comment by Jennifer Schnegg — September 25, 2010 @ 9:15 PMSep -04:00Sep

  125. I mean foods, not woods. I havent looked in health food stores yet. im sure they may have more of a selection of foods I can try.

  131. my boyfriend bought some sandwhich meat and cheese and bread. I tell him that it wont stay at my house when he leaves for work in the morning. He told me just to tell myself not to eat it. I said its not that easy. I only see him 2 x wk. and the foodf will have to stay at my house 1 wk till saterday or sunday. I wont be able to stay away from it. He said then he will just have to go home after he eats it. If he goes home then he wont be back. Its a 20 min. ride. I told him to eat it for lunch. He eats at 11:30am. Tell me, does sandwhich meat spoil in the car from 8am till then if kept in a insulated lunch box. I dont think so. If it has an ice pack it should be ok. Tell me im not wrong

    Comment by Jennifer Schnegg — September 27, 2010 @ 9:15 AMSep -04:00Sep

  132. My guess is, it wil be fine. When I was in rehab, I used to pack my sandwich in an insulated bag and leave it in the car until lunch. (But I don’t eat meat…)

  133. I got a cooler with ice packs, and my lunch stays fine. If you live in an extremely hot place that might not apply though, because even the ice pack melts.
About med bills…I’m blessed that my $125,000 brain surgery (2 a week apart) was mostly covered and the Dr, wrote off the $30,000 that wasnt! PTL!! I’d ask the Dr.or Hosp if they’d help you with that $2,700. It couldn’t hurt.
    Thankful list.
Thankful that I have Sunday and Monday off. Sunday for Church and family, Monday for Dr.s, rest and chores.
    Thankful for clean drinking water.
Thankful I’m able to see family and friends this weekend in Fl.
Thankful for the people, family and Angels God has put in my life to get me through tough situations.

  134. Hi,

    im greatfull

    1. “NO SEIZURES!!” in 2 days since adjusting the time of day I take 1 of my meds. instead of taking lamictal 2x a day, I take it 4 x

in between the hrs I take lyrica. so now is the pain in the but. Taking pills every 2 hrs. lyrica, then lamictal, then lyrica… etc.

    2. It appears to work. We will see. I will let you know. I hope it works.

What I dont like is now im a bit more shaky. Im though not sure if it could also be the diet in addition to the time change.

Maybe both. It sure is hard to stay away from food I should not eat if its in the house. I told him to come after work to please take it home.

If its not here in my presence, then I could care less about if I dont have it. After a while it will get easier to stay away from food I shouldnt have if it is in my house.

    3. My father did tell me of some gluten free grains. Im excited to try them.

    4. He said that when they(my parents) go back to get some more, they will bring me some.

    5. the weather was cooler and I didnt have to worry about having to water my poor plants dieing from thirst.

    6. bathed quincey today and he behaved.

    7. mother should come over tomorow morning.

    Comment by Jennifer Schnegg — September 28, 2010 @ 9:15 AMSep -04:00Sep

    • As for remembering the timing to take your meds, you could set an alarm on your cell phone to remind you. That’s what I did.

I WONDER WHY THEY TOOK AWAY THE “THUMBS UP”???

      Comment by Phylis Feiner Johnson — September 28, 2010 @ 9:15 PMSep -04:00Sep

  135. oh, when I said I adjusted meds. I still take the same amount. I just split the pill in halve. Just to make it clear. Im not taking more meds, just split it.

    2. I am going to my local EF fundraising dinner tonight, as a guest, because I rewote the silent auction copy

    3. It’s beautiful and breezy (and I hope it won’t rain on the EF golfers!)

  137. I have some very good news!

its about reem, she decided to go outside down to the beach and take a nice run and walk

Im very greatfull for that! I was worried about her for a while.

She did go without telling her mom because she would not have let her go out.

I think her mother sheilds her too much. I should think it ok to go outside, but its also good to tell someone where you go. But what can you do if her mother wont let her go outside.

    Comment by Jennifer Schnegg — September 29, 2010 @ 9:15 AMSep -04:00Sep

  138. Hi Jennifer,

That is something I am grateful for: Reem going oustide and walking and running.

Her mother does shield her to much, I agree. Is Reem an adult?

If she is encourage her to go outside more. All of us need to. It is healthy for body and mind.

My son has health problems but he goes for walks every day. He does not have to tell us where he is going. He tells us anyway. We tell him to have a good time. I do not shield him at all. I never have. I am grateful to have him. He helps with the housework, too. He is 30 years old.

I am sure Reem is grateful to have you as a friend.

    Comment by Ruth Brown — September 29, 2010 @ 9:15 AMSep -04:00Sep

  139. yes, Ruth. I told her about contacting the epilepsy foundation about helping her find where she can go.

She came up with that idea on her own that she needs to get out of the house and start a new life.

The one she has now isnt working for her. Not the study she wants to do.

Yes she is an adult, 22 or 23 I think.

If I may ask, what type of health problems does your son have? Is it epilepsy too?

It is so refreshing to come home from work and read e-mail’s from all you real trooper’s that never say ‘quit’, instead of the usual garbage Fwd’s that just clog up the comp.
When I see that “New Comment, Gratitude is the attitude” on my email, it makes me smile before I even open it.
I’ll be around half of tommorow, but probably be scarce next week cause I’m going away and don’t know if I’ll have comp acess where I go. I’ll catch up when I can.
God willing, I’ll have a Driver’s License when I get home.
